When I was a kid, I was a very good snow skier. Skis close together, parallel … swoosh, swoosh. Skis way too long for my body weight, and snappy jackets that were more colorful than Joseph and his amazing technicolor dreamcoat (yep, loved that Broadway musical). I tackled the best black diamond trails across the US and Europe … and I had the opportunity to ski in SHORTS on European glaciers in July and August. Man, it was great to be young!
Then, a funny thing happened. I got a job, got married, and got bills to pay.
Yep, once I got a job my perspective changed. I started thinking about what would happen if I fell and got hurt. How could I go to work? How would I pay my bills? How would I make ends meet? Now I had so many life responsibilities … and injury would become destructive on so many levels.
Every time I went skiing, getting hurt was rattling around in my head. Constantly! I couldn’t help but fall all over the place, and I even got myself hurt a few times. I was no longer comfortable just being “one with the wind” and hurling myself down the mountain. My thinking so greatly limited my natural potential.
By the time I was 24, I had quit skiing altogether … and I haven’t strapped on a pair of skis in 23 years!
Believing that I’d fall and get hurt, led to lots of negative thinking about getting hurt, which led to negative behaving … which was lots of falling, getting hurt, fear, frustration, and ultimately quitting!
This is no different than our walk with Jesus.
To quote CS Lewis, “We are what we believe we are.” Our believing will so drastically mess up our thinking … and in the end … our own behaving.
If you believe you are a sinner, you are going to sin. If you believe that you are righteous, you are going to walk righteously. If all you ever think about is sin, you are going to sin. If all you think about is Him dwelling inside you … you are going to walk like Jesus.
I fell down the mountain because all I thought about was … falling down the mountain! My natural state was to FLY down the mountain, but my believing and thinking robbed me of who I was as a skier. Likewise, our natural state as a child of God is to walk with Jesus in His authority, but too many times our faulty believing and wrong thinking robs us of who we are in Him!
Not only that, but if we believe His nature is one of both shame and condemnation, we will walk ashamed and condemned. If we believe His nature is one of love … we will walk with His peace and authority. If we believe He punishes, we walk scared. If we believe that He corrects … we walk thankful for loving correction and parental wisdom.
If you believe defeated, you will live, love, and walk defeated. You were purposed before time began to walk with ROYALTY AS ROYALTY. You are a royal priest, co-heir to the Kingdom, holy and blameless right NOW in His sight! You, [your full name here] are seated with Him right NOW in the heavenly realms! Ephesians 2:6-10
Irrational beliefs ABOUT God can only lead to an irrational walk WITH God!
We “walk out” what we believe. If you believe you are worthless to God, you will walk out a life of worthlessness. If you believe you are loved and highly favored by God, you will walk out a life of love and power.
If you believe you CAN’T ever be forgiven by God, you will spend your entire life spinning mental wheels of doubt, fear, depression, anger, and hurt. But, if you believe that you are ALREADY forgiven of your human stupidity, then you will walk with certainty, power, peace, joy, love, effectiveness, thankfulness, and the FREEDOM to be who he created you to be.
As a child of God, sealed with His Spirit, and a believer in His work on the cross … there is nothing you can do to mess up your righteousness. Why? Because JESUS IS OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS 24/7! You and I stay completely righteous all the time – even when we do stupid human things – because HE IS RIGHTEOUS! Look, we are the righteousness of God IN JESUS’ PERFECT RIGHTEOUSNESS! It’s not about YOU, it’s about HIM!
His blood never went corrupt, His blood did the job right the first time, His work was completed at the cross, and your faith has already been credited to you ONCE as His perfect righteousness in Him. Will He teach and correct us – yes. But He never stopped having your back, and it is His job not to lose YOU! (Philippians 3:9; 1 Corinthians 1:30; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Romans 4:3; Hebrews 10:12-14; and John 6:39)
In the end, as his kiddo, your walk in this earth is a pure manifestation of your own beliefs about how Daddy God sees **YOU**!
He sees you as His child ALREADY freed from shame and loves you enough that He gave us life through the cross. We must clearly see ourselves as He sees us … or we will always walk with a spiritual limp.
Yet, the Christian walk isn’t about believing HARDER … NO, it’s about believing far DEEPER! Set your mind and human thinking aside, and believe way deep inside yourself the things that He has SAID about YOU.
* Believe deeply that YOU are loved.
* Believe deeply that YOU are already free from sin.
* Believe deeply that YOU have already been forgiven.
* Believe deeply that YOU have already been chosen.
* Believe deeply that YOU are already made whole.
* Believe deeply that YOU walk in His authority.
* Believe deeply that YOU hold His power within you.
The deeper inside that you believe, the more peace you will carry … and the deeper the impact on your life and those around you.
Believe this. You didn’t choose Him, He chose YOU! Yes, even with your most private, hurtful, embarrassing, and darkest moments … He loves you that much!
Church, it’s time for us to get back on the slopes and be one with the wind.
Ephesians 1:4-6 (NIV)
4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.
