I like to go for long walks in our neighborhood, and it seems that EVERY dog is out to get me. It’s amazing how many front doors and/or gates to backyard fences will open up as I pass on by … and their dogs come charging right at me. The small yappy ones don’t bother me that much, but the bigger ones can be a little more intimidating. Either way, when dogs come charging in my direction … some with happy doggie smiles and tails wagging … and other ones showing their teeth with tails straight out … they ALL flat out listen to me! Yep, I hold my foot straight out in a funky “karate kid” motion … I point at them with my finger … and tell them to stop.
Some sit. Some stop and stare. Some run back over to their owner. But, they never, ever continue towards me aggressively. Why? Even though I’m not the dog owner, I have God given authority over things that go bump in the night (and on long neighborhood walks).
According to Colossians 2:15, Satan was disarmed at the cross … his authority has been stripped away … and our enemy has already been defeated! Ephesians 1:19 promises me that I have His incomparably great power just because I believe! Yes, little old me, as a believer in Christ, I have been given great, great authority in His name. Truthfully, Christ that is IN me is far greater, far more influential, and far more powerful than he (satan) who is in this world (1 John 4:4)! If you want to get technical, we as believers have been handed the power and authority that was stripped away from satan at the cross! We are seated – right now – with Jesus our King in the heavenly realms (Eph 2:6)! Yes, you and I are sitting with Him in the front row of the heavenlies!
The only place satan has access to mess with us … is our minds! His only position of access to you … is one of messing with your head! Truly, satan is like an ugly, drooling, barking dog chained to a stake in someone’s front yard. He makes a lot of noise, he may get your attention, and he isn’t even yours to begin with … but that ugly, drooling dog can only go as far as YOU let him! YOU have the authority to tell it to sit down, play dead, and be quiet!
I was subbing for a 5th grade teacher once, and I made a student named Seth in charge of the entire class. Seth was tiny, tiny. I made Seth the teacher for the day and I told him he had the power to take away recess, to give extra homework, and to give lunch detention. He looked at me like I was crazy. How were these other kids going to listen to him? Well, while he was teaching the lesson … I took off my neck tie and I placed it around his neck. I stood behind him with my arms crossed the entire time he was in front of the class … and there wasn’t one peep in the room. Why? He was operating in MY authority.
It is no different with Jesus! He stands along side us and INSIDE us with His power and authority … we simply operate in Him! He has given us authority over darkness! Yes … when we believe it, we can walk in it!
Here is another way of looking at it.
A friend of mine who is a police officer once told me a story about his wife at a traffic stop. His wife had been pulled over for speeding, and when the officer approached her car window … he saw a local police association sticker on the windshield.
The officer asked her, “Are you an officer?” She said, “No, but my husband is.”
The officer at the traffic stop let her go. Not because of anything that she had done … but because of WHO her husband is! She operated in her husband’s authority! Without going to the police academy, she operated in HIS badge!
It is no different with Jesus! He shed His blood. He is King! He is the Holy One of Israel! We, as His deputized co-workers … get to operate in what He did at the cross! Without shedding our own blood … WE too died at the cross and get to operate in the power of His blood!
When we look at the global news, it is easy to think the world is going to the dogs. But look again, it is going to His co-heirs. Great things are coming to those desiring and willing to walk in their God given authority!
Colossians 2:15 (NIV)
15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
